Gearing up for Santa

We are so excited for Christmas... on the 1st December we decorated our school with Christmassy things: a huge wreath near the stairs, a snowman and lights in the cafe, fibre-optic decorations, baubles, tinsel and blue lights in the reception area. Now we feel like we are prepared for the Rose of York Christmas Party on the 11th December. This year's party promises to be amazing; the venue is really great and central, we have some amazing prizes for the raffle and Santa Claus is coming to town.

Tuesday 17 November 2009

Last Friday we had our mid-term party at the Pontefract Castle in Wigmore street. A lot of students managed to attend which made it a really fun, sociable get-together. There were even some past students who came, and some past teachers too!

These social mixers are what makes the Rose of York such a fun place to study - you never feel like you have nothing to do!

Below you can see some examples of scary Halloween stories that the students wrote.

1ST PRIZE went to CARLO & TOMOKO – intermediate class
It was October the 31st, 3 years after that tragic event. Teachers were organising a party, but many students were still frightened…
On the same day, in the same school, a child committed suicide. His schoolmates bullied him and he felt miserable because none of the teachers even helped him. He committed suicide by hanging himself in the Theatre room. After that, every year, he chose his victim, on Halloween night, to take his revenge.
During the party, he looks at a student who has been bullying other students, he chases him, and in the shadow of the night, he kills him.
Next morning, everybody can see a body dangling from the ceiling of the Theatre room.
Maybe it’s just a coincidence, but the name of that boy, so shy, so alone, was Nick. Exactly 3 years ago a person became a teacher in that school…
His name is Nick.

KORAY – upper intermediate class
Obviously, you expect me to write an account about Halloween. Unfortunately I disappointed all you. Actually highly no-one believes in spirits of the dead rising their graves. This doesn’t make sense, even though everyone pretend to believe in and celebrate it.
Do you ever think why it’s considered that spirits of the dead to be alive? We have to stop and think in that point which takes us to business world. In fact this is really really business. If trying to find the reasons underlying such special days as mother’s day, father’s day, lover’s day and so on. You meet all time same thing that is a commercial purposes. Market economy encourages and urges you spending much more money on the date than usual. The demand grew good sold which work years of the economy in the world. Aim is to have been consumed much more and make the markets movements. So actually Halloween is a product that the minority produces in their minds.

CATALINA AND NIHAN – advanced class
On Halloween night everyone was ready to celebrate the Pagan New Year. All the students were excited for the party. Most of them met in front of the tube station to go to the party together. They took the central Line towards the party. They were talking on the train about their fancy dress and make up, they were making jokes to each other.
And suddenly the train stopped on one of London’s abandoned underground stations. All the passengers in the train were shocked, because the train never stopped on that station. They were all waiting for an announcement. They thought it was a Halloween trick but there was no announcement, nothing… so they started to feel terrified, some of them tried to open windows and some others started to use emergency buttons to open the doors but unfortunately they couldn’t manage it.
One of the girls dressed as a witch yelled about a black cat on the station and then everyone looked at the station and they saw many black cats coming towards them. All the people were watching the cats and waiting fearfully. The cats started to jump on the train. They were scratching the windows, making strange noises, yowling and crawling towards the top of the train.
Everyone was terrified, they were trying to call for help on their mobiles but unfortunately there was no network, no internet down the station.
Suddenly a boy saw 2 Underground workers at the station and he showed them to the others. They all felt relief and relaxed. But when the workers came closer to the train the passengers noticed that they weren’t alive: they were zombies. Everyone was in shock, some of the people were crying, screaming. There was absolute chaos in the train.
They heard an engine start. They were trying to understand what was going on… the train started to move into the tunnel slowly and no-one ever heard of the train and its passengers again.
All we know about them was what was on the security cameras until they left the station.

Halloween Party

We held our Halloween Party at International Students House on Friday 30th October. Everyone was encouraged to dress up, and some people went all out... Count Dracula, the Mummy, witches, zombies and ghouls all made an appearance. Nick started things off with the Mummy Game where you have to quickly wrap your partner in toilet paper until they look like a mummy. Then we played Bobbing for Apples; we convinced some students and staff to put their heads in a bucket of water to grab an apple with their teeth. After that we awarded prizes for the best dressed (Inga the Wicked Witch) and the scary story competition (Carlos the Mummy). Then we got down to the business of enjoying the cheap drinks!

Tuesday 27 October 2009

We are all really looking forward to the Halloween Party this Friday at International Students House. There will be fancy dress, games and cheap drinks. :)

We went to the National Portrait Gallery.

Quiz Night

We held a Pub Quiz - style event at the Rose Cafe on Friday 2nd October 2009. The Quiz was not as easy as we thought it would be, with a table-football round, name-the-continent-this-animal-comes-from round, and an all-girl arm wrestling round (my bicep still hurts...). In the end, Mie's team won, and they even beat the teachers, ex-teachers, admin staff and even the Director of Studies. Free sangria and snacks were provided and afterwards we went to the local club near Oxford Street. We must all say thanks to Nick for organising the event, writing the quiz and for being such a high-energy Quizmaster!
